Azalea bursting through the school doors in frog-eye headband and rainbow overalls, arms out, kids streaming past her — Azalea Mireles arrives at school the way weather arrives.

Three girls huddled by lockers whispering over a notebook with a padlock doodle, Azalea watching from a distance — But today the hallway already has a secret in it.

Peyton handing out little glittery membership cards at lunch, Marlowe and Savannah giggling, Azalea reaching out hopefully and getting passed over — The cards were pink. The cards were glittery. The cards ran out exactly one person early.

Azalea alone at the end of a lunch table, chin on arms, sandwich untouched, glasses slightly fogged — It was not totally fine.
