There are kids who walk into school and there are kids who happen to it. Azalea Mireles came through the double doors at 7:52 on a Tuesday with her arms straight out like an airplane, a green frog headband riding her short spiky hair, and a rainbow tee glowing underneath her patched overalls like something switched on.

She had been awake since four in the morning, and an idea that arrives at four in the morning cannot be carried quietly. It has to be announced. It has to be shouted down a hallway at two dozen sixth graders who are still trying to find the right binder, and it has to be shouted with your whole chest.

Some of them laughed. A few of them looked at each other. One boy near the water fountain said the thing about the frog ears he said most mornings. Azalea heard all of it and none of it, because she was eleven and the idea was enormous and the day had barely started.

But something was already happening in that hallway without her, and it was happening in whispers.

Three girls. One notebook. A padlock drawn on the cover in silver gel pen, pressed so hard the paper had gone shiny. Their heads were bent so close together that their ponytails touched, and when Azalea got near, the whispering did not stop so much as fold itself smaller.

She slowed down for the first time all morning. That was unusual enough that she noticed it happening to her own feet. She did not know the rules of the thing yet, or the name of it, or who had thought of it. She only knew, the way you always somehow know, that there were rules, and that they had been written on a day when she was not in the room.

By lunch the cards were everywhere: pink, glittery, hand-lettered, one tiny star inked into the corner of each. They came out of a pencil case like tickets to something.

Azalea did the brave thing without even deciding to. She got in line for a thing that had no line. She held her hand out at exactly the right moment, with her biggest and most hopeful face on, and she watched the last card go right past her fingers into somebody else's palm.

Nobody was cruel about it. Nobody snickered. Nobody even seemed to notice she had been standing there with her hand out, which was somehow the very worst available version of it, because there was nothing to be angry at and nowhere to put the feeling down.

So she carried her tray to the far end of the table and did the thing kids do when something hurts and there is nobody obvious to blame for it: she turned the whole thing inward and started hunting for the defect.

What is wrong with me, she thought, as though being left out were a diagnosis somebody had written on a chart she was not allowed to read. Too loud. Too much. Too many ideas at four in the morning. She went through herself like a person going through a backpack looking for a missing permission slip.

Her sandwich sat there getting warm. Across the cafeteria the glitter cards caught the light every time somebody moved, which felt, at the time, deliberate.

And then, at 12:41, the new kid did the single most astonishing thing Azalea had ever personally witnessed.

Junie Park came up the hallway on a sticker-covered skateboard she was not supposed to have indoors, took her own glittery pink card out of her windbreaker pocket, and dropped it into the recycling bin without slowing down enough to watch it land.

Azalea's mouth came open. Somewhere at the back of her head, a whole shelf of assumptions she had been keeping very tidy fell quietly over. The card was the most important object in the sixth grade. She had spent an entire lunch period being sad about the card. And somebody had just thrown one away like a receipt.

The most interesting kid in the building introduced herself on the front steps at 3:15, balancing a skateboard on the toe of one beat-up sneaker like it weighed nothing.

Junie was new. Junie was blunt. Junie was funny in a completely flat voice that made it funnier, and she was genuinely, deeply unbothered by clubs of any kind, in a way Azalea could not stop turning over in her hands.

Azalea, who had never been unbothered by anything in her entire life, decided on the spot that this was the most interesting person in the whole building, and asked her roughly nine questions in a row. Junie answered four of them. That, apparently, was how it worked.

After the last bell, Nia arrived like an ambulance and Wren arrived like a lawyer.

One of them brought half a cookie and a hand on Azalea's back and absolutely no questions. The other one brought a numbered list of reasons the club was stupid, beginning with the padlock, which was drawn on, and which therefore locked nothing, and which Wren considered a serious design flaw worth discussing at length.

Sitting between the two of them on the low brick wall by the bike rack, Azalea started breathing at a normal speed again. This is not a small thing to be able to do at the end of a bad day, and it is not something you can do by yourself, and she was old enough to notice that both of those facts were true.

Here is the thing it took her the whole rest of the book to fully believe, and which she wrote down that afternoon in handwriting that got bigger and bigger as it went along.

Being left out was an event. It happened on a Tuesday, near a locker, next to a notebook with a fake padlock on it. It had a time and a place, the way weather does.

It was not a fact about her. It did not tell her, or anybody else in that building, one single thing about what she was worth. She underlined that twice and then, because she was Azalea, drew a dragon next to it holding a tiny sign with nothing written on it.

She made it all the way home before the day caught up with her. Through the hallway, out the front doors, down two blocks, up the porch steps, in the door — and then the backpack hit the rug and she went face down into the couch cushions like a dropped coat.

Her mom did not say cheer up. Her mom did not say it's not a big deal, or they're not worth it, or any of the other things adults say when they want a feeling to be over faster than it's going to be. She crouched down by the couch, put one hand flat on Azalea's back, and said she didn't have to be okay yet. Which, strangely, made it a little easier to breathe.

Later there was cocoa, the good kind with too many marshmallows, and the kitchen was dark except the one light over the table. Her mom took a napkin and a marker and drew four small paw prints in a row.

"Four steps," she said. "One paw at a time." Azalea leaned her chin on her hand and watched the marker squeak. She had expected advice. She was getting a diagram, and Azalea has never in her life been able to resist a diagram.

The first paw was stop — not forever, just long enough for her face to stop being ahead of her brain. The second was look at what actually happened, the real parts, the parts a camera would have caught. The third was wonder: what else could explain it, besides the worst thing? The fourth was pick what to say or do about it.

Azalea held the napkin up with both hands like a treasure map. "Stop, look, wonder, do," she said, and her mom pointed at the third paw and said that one was the hard one, and she was right, and Azalea did not believe her yet.

In the morning she taped the napkin inside her locker door, dead center, above the turtle keychain, where she would have to look at it every single day whether she wanted to or not.

Kids went by behind her. Nobody asked what it was. She pressed the tape down with her thumb twice, said, "Okay, napkin, don't let me down," and went to class with a plan for the first time in roughly her whole life.

The napkin got tested before lunch. Peyton and Marlowe were by the lockers, heads together, and right as Azalea walked past they absolutely lost it laughing.

Her whole body decided instantly: they're laughing at me. It didn't feel like a guess. It felt like a fact arriving, heavy and certain, the way it always did — and that, it turned out, was exactly the moment the first paw print was for.

So she stopped. She got out her notebook at her desk, tongue out, and drew a line down the middle of the page.

On the left she wrote only what a camera would have caught: two girls laughed near her locker. That was the entire list. On the right she wrote everything she had added for free, and the right side was so much longer than the left side that she actually said "huh" out loud and the boy next to her asked what.

The wondering happened at home, with her chin in her hands, which is the only position she can think in. She made herself come up with three other explanations, and they came out sillier and sillier, which helped.

Something on Peyton's phone. Somebody's dog. Something that happened last Saturday that Azalea had no way of knowing about. None of them were proof. That was sort of the point: she didn't have proof either way, and she had been walking around all day carrying the worst version like it was the only one.

The next morning she used the fourth paw print, which for once meant just asking. "What was so funny yesterday?"

It was a goat. A real goat, standing on the roof of Peyton's mom's car, photographed at close range, looking deeply unbothered. Azalea laughed so hard she had to hold onto the locker. It had never been about her. Not one single part of it had been about her, and she had felt terrible all day for free.

Wednesday she arrived with bee antennae, a map, a schedule and a game she had invented at 4 a.m. involving three zones and a rule about hopping.

Nia said they were doing basketball today. Just that, cheerfully, already walking. Azalea heard her own voice go up — but I made a whole MAP — and heard how it sounded, which was like someone trying to make people do something.

Here is the thing she was learning, and it is not a fun thing to learn: people are allowed to want something else. Not as a punishment. Not as a message. They just want to shoot hoops, and that has nothing to do with whether they like you.

Junie spun the ball on one finger and said come find us after. It wasn't a door closing. Azalea stood there and let the map be a map instead of a rule everybody had to follow.

Which left her alone in the middle of the field with an entire afternoon in her hands and nobody to hand it to.

She waited to feel terrible. She did feel a little terrible, for about ninety seconds. Then she noticed the grass was full of clover and the big tree had a branch shaped exactly like a chair, and she thought, with some surprise: fine. I am excellent company.

The log by the fence tipped up easier than expected, and underneath it was a whole city.

Nine pill bugs, which she counted twice to be sure. One beetle the size of a thumbnail. One worm doing something frankly rude. She lay flat on her stomach in the grass with her chin in the dirt, yelled "NINE of them!" at nobody at all, and was completely, uncomplicatedly happy.

The beetle was green. Not green-ish. Green like an expensive car, green like a traffic light, green with little rainbow places where the light hit it.

She got it into her cupped palm and held the magnifying glass up to one eye, and for about four minutes there was nothing else happening anywhere in the world. "You," she told it, "are the best thing that happened today." The beetle declined to comment and walked off her thumb.

After the bugs she climbed into the crook of the tree with the dinosaur book from her backpack, the fat one with the fold-out page, and read with one sneaker hanging in the air.

Far below, the basketball game went on without her, and it did not hurt. That was new. She checked twice, the way you press a bruise. Nobody today, she thought, and still a good day.

Nia and Junie came looking for her at the end of recess, sweaty and out of breath and slightly worried, because she had not been where she usually was.

They did not find a sad kid on a bench. They found her crouched at the roots with a chunk of moss held over her head like a trophy, yelling that it was a forest, an actual forest, on a rock.

So all three of them ended up shoulder to shoulder over the log, passing the magnifying glass back and forth, Junie's skateboard forgotten in the grass.

Nobody had given anything up. Nia and Junie got their basketball. Azalea got her afternoon. And then there was still enough of the day left over for all three of them to be in the dirt together, which is the part Azalea would not have believed on Monday night with her face in the couch cushions.

Naturally, Azalea's plan for Wednesday was enormous.

A dragon tournament. Four teams, seven levels, a scoring system with bonus points for style, all of it invented at four in the morning and lettered onto poster board in six different colors while the rest of the house was asleep and the kitchen lamp made everything look important.

She carried it out onto the blacktop at recess the way a herald carries a scroll into a castle, absolutely certain — the way you can only be certain about something you made alone at four in the morning — that the second anybody saw it, everything else happening on that playground would stop.

The trouble was that everything else happening on that playground had started nine minutes earlier and mattered enormously to the people doing it.

They were playing handball. Somebody was winning. Somebody had just been robbed by a bad bounce and was arguing about it with real feeling. Her tournament had thirty rules; their game had one, and the one rule was hit the ball.

The ball rolled slowly away across the blacktop while four faces looked at her beautiful poster and said nothing at all. It is a very specific kind of quiet, the quiet of a good idea landing in a place that did not ask for it, and Azalea would remember the sound of it for a long time.

Junie, meanwhile, solved the entire problem in about two seconds, and did it so casually that Azalea had to take notes from behind a pole.

She walked into a live four-square game mid-bounce, asked if she was in, and was in. No poster. No levels. No bonus points for style. No dragons whatsoever.

Azalea wrote that down and underlined it twice and then sat there on the cold asphalt staring at the underline like it was a magic word somebody had left lying around. Ask to do the thing they are already doing. It seemed far too small to be the answer. Most real answers are.

Nia's trick was almost insulting in how small it was.

Watch first, she said, crouched behind the bushes at the edge of the field like the two of them were filming a nature documentary about middle schoolers. Find out what they are already doing. Then ask to do that thing. Not a better thing. That thing.

It was the least Azalea-ish instruction ever issued to a human child, and Azalea said so, loudly, twice, before agreeing to try it — mostly because Nia had the kind of patience that makes arguing feel like a lot of effort for nothing.

She lasted nine seconds.

Nine seconds of watching, and then she was suggesting an improvement to a game she was not yet playing, in a whisper that was not a whisper, to a friend who had already told her the rule. Nia pulled her back down behind the bushes by the strap of her overalls.

Second try: eleven seconds. Third try: almost a full minute, which is a very long time to hold a good idea in your mouth without letting any of it leak out the sides. Azalea's whole face went pink with the effort. Nia said it was the most impressive thing she had ever seen her do.

In the end it was six words.

Can I be next in line. That was the entire strategy. No poster, no tournament, no thirty rules, no four a.m. scoring system, no dragons at all. Just a question, asked at the right moment, in a normal voice, with her hands clamped behind her back so they could not gesture and make it bigger than it needed to be.

Her heart was going like a drum machine. Her ears were hot. From the outside it looked like nothing happening at all.

They said sure.

They said it the way kids say it — already looking back at the ball, barely a beat of thought spent on her — and that offhandedness, which would have crushed her on Monday, was on Wednesday the single best news of the week. Sure. Not a vote. Not a card. Just sure.

Two minutes later she was airborne, glasses crooked, smacking the handball with a shriek that echoed off the gym wall and startled a bird off the fence. The door had never actually been locked. She had spent a whole week knocking politely on the wall right beside it.

Which is how, on Thursday, Azalea let somebody else teach her something for once.

On grass. Very slowly. With both arms straight out like a scarecrow and an expression of total horror on her face while Junie held the tail of the board steady with one sneaker and Nia laughed so hard she had to sit down in the clover and put her head on her knees.

Bend your knees, Junie said. Stop thinking. Azalea has never once stopped thinking, not for a single second of her life, but she did bend her knees, and she did roll four whole feet, and she did scream the entire way, and all three of them agreed afterward that it counted.

At lunch on Thursday she told the story of the four a.m. idea. All of it.

The twist. The sequel. The part where the dragon has a day job at a laundromat. The part where she had to back up to the beginning because the beginning needed fixing before the middle would make sense, and then the part where the middle changed so the beginning needed fixing again.

Nia listened with her chin in her hand and a smile that got politer and politer as it went, which is a specific kind of smile. It is the smile of a person who has gone quiet on the inside and is waiting for a gap in the road to pull over.

And then Nia — who had never once been mean to her, not in four entire years of being her friend — said the hard thing in the softest voice she had.

I didn't get to talk once today.

That was all. Not accusing. Not even upset, really. Just true, laid on the table between the trays like a fact that had been waiting all lunch period for a gap to fit through and had finally found one. Azalea's mouth was still open around the rest of the dragon story. She closed it.

Junie said exactly the same thing forty minutes later, with a fork in her hand and no softness applied to it anywhere.

You've been talking since Tuesday.

Azalea sat straight up on her own hands with her mouth clamped shut and discovered something genuinely surprising, which was that the blunt version and the gentle version did not feel different in her stomach. Not really. They landed in the same place and did the same thing.

Both of them were somebody telling her the truth because they intended to stick around. That, it turned out, was the whole difference — not how soft the sentence was, but which direction the person was facing when they said it.

Step one of Azalea's feelings, as always, was total catastrophe.

Bathroom mirror. Fogged-up glasses. Fox ears sitting crooked on her spiky hair and no energy available for fixing them. The entire friendship declared over. Her future as a silent person who never says anything to anybody mapped out in considerable detail, including what she would do at lunch for the rest of the year.

All of this was accomplished in the four minutes between the bell and math, which is genuinely impressive, and which is also exactly the problem with being able to think as fast as Azalea can think.

Step two of Azalea's feelings was Wren, leaning in the bathroom doorway with her arms folded, entirely unimpressed by the catastrophe in progress.

If Nia wanted to get rid of you, Wren pointed out, she would not have gone to the trouble of telling you anything. That is work. That takes nerve. She would have just started being busy. Busy is free.

Azalea looked at her own face in the mirror for a second. Then she straightened the fox ears. It is a very strange kind of comfort, being told that the uncomfortable thing is evidence somebody is staying, and it worked, and she has needed it several times since.

So on Friday Azalea tried the genuinely impossible thing.

She asked Nia a question about Nia's weekend. Out loud. On purpose. And then — this is the part that nearly killed her, the part she would like everyone to appreciate — she waited for the entire answer.

Including the slow middle part. Including the section where Nia could not remember whether it was Saturday or Sunday and worked it out from what they had eaten. Without adding anything, improving anything, correcting anything, or introducing a single dragon.

There was a goat in the story.

The goat was worth the wait. The goat had gotten onto a trampoline, which is a sentence that does not need any help from anybody, least of all from a person with a scoring system. All three of them laughed until milk was genuinely in danger and Wren had to put her carton down for safety reasons.

And Azalea understood something she would need again later, more than once: feedback is not the sound of a friend leaving. Sometimes it is the sound of a friend staying, and telling you exactly how to make the staying easier.

Taking turns, it turned out, also works on paper.

Azalea drew the frog. It was a good frog — dignified, slightly annoyed, wearing a tie, because in her version he was a lawyer. Junie leaned over, entirely uninvited, and put a skateboard under him.

Two months earlier Azalea would have defended that frog's legal career to the death and possibly started a petition. Instead she laughed so hard she had to take her glasses off and wipe them on her overalls, and the frog has skated in every single drawing since, tie flying out behind him.

Dash had a bit that week, and the bit was Azalea's head.

The ears, the hair, the voice, the arms — performed loudly at the lockers for an audience of whoever happened to be putting a binder away at the time. Bunny ears, he said, holding his hands up over his own head. What are you, a toddler.

About half the hallway laughed, and about half of that half looked immediately like they wished they hadn't, which is a thing Azalea noticed at the time and did not know what to do with yet.

Junie did not argue with Dash. Arguing was not really available in Junie's voice.

She stepped in front of him, crossed her arms, and waited for the joke to finish dying in the air, which took approximately four extremely long seconds — the kind of seconds you can hear.

Is that the whole joke, she asked. That's it?

Azalea stood behind her shoulder and thought, with real and lasting admiration: I wish I had said that. She wrote it down later, word for word, in case she ever needed it, which she did, twice.

Later that same day Wren said something almost word for word identical about the exact same headband.

You look like a very angry rabbit lawyer, Wren said, flatly, in the middle of social studies.

Azalea laughed so hard she had to put her head down on the desk and the teacher asked if she was all right. Same words, roughly. Same subject. Completely different feeling, top to bottom, inside and out.

That was the puzzle, and she carried it home with her that afternoon like something she had found under a rock and needed to look at in better light.

So she did science about it, on the floor of her bedroom, at night, with the lamp on and the bunny headband parked on the pillow like a specimen.

Two columns in the back of the notebook. Jokes that pull you in on the left. Jokes that use you on the right. Every single one she could remember, in order, with dates where she had them.

And across the top, in the fattest marker she owned, the one question that turned out to sort every single entry correctly: who is laughing with me?

The test, she figured out somewhere around the fourth doodle, was never the words themselves. You cannot sort them by words. She tried.

The test was what her stomach did in the half second afterward, before her brain had time to have an opinion about it.

With Wren it went loose and warm and she wanted to say something back. With Dash it went tight, and stayed tight, and she carried it around in there for the rest of the afternoon like a stone in a shoe. Same words. Two entirely different animals.

On Monday she did not shout and she did not cry, and both of those were choices she made on purpose in the ninety seconds beforehand, standing by the drinking fountain.

She walked up to Dash in front of everybody, with Nia and Wren behind her like weather moving in, and said the plain true sentence out loud.

That joke isn't funny to me. Stop doing it.

Six seconds, start to finish. No speech. No list. No dragon. Dash said huh, and something that was almost okay, and looked at his shoes, and that was the entire event.

Her hands shook the whole way down the hallway afterward.

Actually shook, visibly, the way they do after a scary ride when you are standing in line for the second time and pretending you are fine. She had to hold onto the strap of her backpack with both of them.

She did it anyway. Both of those facts belong in the story and the second one does not cancel the first one out — in fact it is the entire reason the first one counts for anything. Brave is not the absence of shaking. Brave is the shaking, plus the sentence.

And then, because standing up for yourself is exhausting and also completely hilarious, the two of them spent the entire rest of lunch period up on the empty gym bleachers being extremely unkind about one specific laugh.

HA. HA. HAAA, said Junie, pulling the face, doing the shoulders, getting the little wheeze at the end exactly right.

Azalea nearly went backward off the bench and had to be held on to by the overalls. Some jokes, it turns out, are not for the hallway at all. Some jokes are strictly for the two people making them, up in the cheap seats, where nobody gets hurt.

Savannah had lettered the project poster for forty-five careful minutes.

It was the kind of lettering that gets done with a ruler and a light pencil line you erase afterward, one letter at a time, with the tip of your tongue out. She had picked the colors on purpose. She had started over once already and not told anybody.

Azalea looked at it, instantly saw a way to make it better, and improved it in about nine seconds with a fat marker and total, sunny, well-meant confidence.

Somewhere inside those nine seconds something broke, quietly, with no sound at all.

Savannah's face went flat, the way a face does when a person decides not to have the argument. She gathered up her markers one at a time, said never mind, it's your poster now, and walked away down the hallway without looking back.

And Azalea genuinely did not understand why, which is its own particular kind of terrible — standing there holding a marker, looking at a poster that was objectively better than it had been ten seconds ago, with a friend getting smaller down the corridor.

Her first instinct was to prove she was innocent, and she was extremely good at proving things.

I was helping. I didn't mean it like that. I was being nice. I made it better, look at it, it IS better. Every single word of that was true, and not one word of it helped anybody feel anything at all.

Nia stood in the hallway with her hands in her hoodie pocket and said the sentence that ran the rest of the chapter: I believe you. She's still hurt.

Both things were true at the same time, and that is not a trick, and it is not a technicality.

I didn't mean to hurt you. You got hurt.

Azalea sat out on the bench by the door with the leaves coming down around her and turned it over and over until it stopped feeling like an accusation and started feeling more like arithmetic. Two numbers. Both real. Neither one cancels the other one out.

Good intentions, it turns out, do not erase somebody else's afternoon. They only explain your own.

Junie had done it too, once, and admitted it at the art room sink while holding the evidence in both hands.

A clay sheep, snapped clean through the middle, belonging to a boy named Ravi who had spent two whole periods on it.

I told him it was fine, Junie said, entirely without excuses, rinsing her hands. It was not fine. It was his sheep. So then I said sorry with no but in it, and that part actually worked, and now we're okay.

It was, Azalea thought, the most useful sentence anybody had handed her all month.

Azalea practiced the apology eleven times in her room and crossed out every single but.

There were a lot of buts. But I was helping. But it looked better. But I didn't know. Every one of them was a little door she could slip out of, and she closed every single one on purpose, which took longer than the whole poster had taken in the first place.

What was left was short: I took over your poster. That wasn't fair. I'm sorry. Plus a stack of fresh poster paper and her own favorite glitter pen, handed over permanently, no borrowing arrangement, no conditions, no small print.

Savannah did the lettering.

Azalea did the dragons, inside the lines, on purpose, with her tongue out, checking twice before every stroke. It took twice as long as it would have taken her to just do it her own way, and she said so out loud exactly zero times.

The poster got an A and a spot on the hallway wall by the office, and neither of them ever mentioned the marker again — which is what a finished apology is actually for. Not for feeling better. For being able to put the thing down.

It took three people to carry the thing down to the hallway wall, which is exactly how many people had made it.

Letters by Savannah. Dragons by Azalea. Wheels by Junie, who had stayed late on Thursday for no reason at all except that she felt like it and had a marker in her pocket.

Nobody signed it. It did not need signing. Anybody who knew the three of them could read the whole story straight off the poster board, which is the best a poster can honestly hope for.

Saturday arrived with a plan. Azalea's plan.

Laminated. Color coded. Timed in fifteen-minute blocks with snack breaks built in and a ten-minute buffer for transitions, taped to the fridge before either of her mothers was awake, with a pie chart in the corner.

Nobody has ever established what the pie chart was for. Azalea maintains that it was obvious. When asked what the segments represented, she has, on three separate occasions, changed the subject.

Nia wanted soccer and had brought the muddy ball up the driveway to prove it.

Wren wanted a movie, specifically one with exactly one spooky worm in it, which she described in enough detail that everybody stopped talking for a second.

Nobody at all wanted the laminated plan — including, eventually, the laminator, which jammed on Thursday and had been making a smell ever since. The plan sat there on the fridge under a magnet shaped like an avocado, being extremely well organized, all by itself.

And then a fourth opinion came through the backyard gate carrying plywood.

Junie had built a ramp. A real one, sort of, with actual screws in it and a piece of carpet on the top, and she had carried it eleven blocks by herself, stopping twice, arriving sweaty and entirely matter-of-fact about the whole thing.

There was no ramp slot on the plan. There was no slot for anything that had not been invented at four in the morning by Azalea, which was the single biggest design flaw in the document, and which the pie chart had not caught.

For one entire hour, three best friends stood in a backyard and did absolutely nothing at all.

A soccer ball spun slowly on one finger. A movie case got pointed at twice and put back down. A laminated plan wilted in the sun, which laminated things are not even supposed to be able to do. Somebody said maybe every four minutes.

It was, by unanimous agreement afterward, the least fun hour of the entire month, and it happened entirely because four people each had a perfectly good idea and none of them wanted to go second.

Then Azalea did the bravest thing she had done all week, which was to tear her own plan into three pieces in front of everybody.

Rip. Rip. Rip. Right through the pie chart.

Whose idea should we do first, she said, and her voice only wobbled on the word first. Not because the plan was bad — the plan was, objectively, a beautiful document — but because bending was the only move left on the board that could possibly work, and she had run out of reasons not to make it.

Somebody else's idea won, and it won so completely that Azalea went briefly airborne off a piece of plywood while three people screamed her name in the same key.

She landed mostly on her feet. Her glasses landed in the grass about four feet away, entirely undamaged, which she took as a sign.

Wren filmed all of it with a completely flat expression and one hand in her hoodie pocket, and has, to this day, never deleted it, and plays it at approximately every opportunity, and Azalea asks her to.

Bending did not kill her. Bending got her extremely, gloriously muddy.

Face down in the wet grass. Panda ears soaked through and flopping. Soccer ball rolling cheerfully away toward the fence with nobody chasing it, because everybody was too busy laughing.

I'm a goalie now, she announced to the entire street from the ground, in the voice she uses for announcements. This is my life. Nia had to lie down in the grass next to her because she could not stand up and laugh at the same time.

The spooky worm was, frankly, a lot.

Azalea watched most of it through her fingers, sitting on the middle cushion between the two of them, and refused with total conviction to let anybody pause it, on the grounds that pausing it would be worse. Nobody has been able to explain her reasoning since, including her.

Her own turn got penciled in for the following Saturday, on a plan that nobody laminated, which had no pie chart and no fifteen-minute blocks, and which said, in full: Azalea picks.

After all of it — the watching, the waiting, the six words, the apology, the mud — the Secret Club came to her.

A glitter card with her actual name on it, in silver gel pen, held out by the lockers like a prize at the end of a level she had not known she was playing.

We found a spare, Peyton said. You're in.

And for about one and a half seconds, standing there in the hallway, it was the best moment of Azalea's entire sixth-grade year.

There was one small condition attached, delivered lightly, the way you mention the weather on the way out the door.

You can sit with us. Just, you know. Not with Wren anymore. Club rule.

Azalea's face was still finishing its smile when the rest of her caught up with what had just been said. It is a strange feeling, having your face be one sentence behind your stomach. She stood there with the card in her hand and the hallway going on around her and understood exactly what she had been handed.

Peyton had a condition ready for Junie too, because there was apparently a condition for everybody.

You can join. Just leave the board at home.

Junie heard the entire offer out, which took three seconds, raised precisely one eyebrow, and said no thanks in exactly the voice she would have used to decline a napkin. Then she rolled away down the hallway, which she was still not supposed to do indoors.

Azalea watched the whole transaction from four feet away and filed it somewhere important and permanent.

Two tables. One tray.

Everything she had learned in one week balanced on top of it, plus a carton of milk and a sandwich she was not going to eat. Watch first. Ask small. Say the true thing. Bend. Bend again.

She had gotten so good at bending by then that for a second, standing there in the middle of the cafeteria with everybody's peripheral vision on her, she nearly bent right down through the floor.

She had learned to compromise. That was the whole middle of the book.

And standing there with a tray in her hands she finally learned the other half of it, the half nobody had written down for her yet: being flexible does not mean being endlessly available. It does not mean you are for sale. It does not mean you trade in a friend to get a seat at a table.

She set the card down on the table, face up, said thanks anyway, and walked to the other one. She did not explain it twice. She has never once explained it twice.

Two kids walked away from the same lunch table that afternoon for two completely different reasons and met in the middle of the walkway, and one of them put an arm over the other one's shoulder without asking.

Rejected by the same club, Junie said. Twins.

Azalea decided on the spot that this was the best record anybody had in the sixth grade and should probably go on a certificate. Junie said absolutely not. Azalea made one anyway, later, at four in the morning, out of construction paper.

She sat down hard between Nia and Wren and blew out a breath that had been stuck in there since Monday.

You gave back a glitter card, Wren said, sounding almost alarmed about it, holding a pretzel entirely still. For me.

Don't make it weird, Azalea told her. Eat your pretzels.

Neither of them ate any pretzels for a while. Nia looked at the ceiling with her chin up, which is what Nia does instead of crying in a cafeteria.

And then a very surprising thing walked over carrying a lunch tray.

Marlowe — who is tall and calm and had never once in her life cared about a club — asked whether the seat was members only.

It was not. It has never been. That is the entire policy of everything Azalea has built since, and it was invented right there, by accident, at a lunch table, with a mouth full of sandwich, by a girl who had been left out on a Tuesday and had decided to do something else with the information.

The fourth four a.m. idea of the month, and the one that stuck: Ears Club.

You wear the ears, you're in. That is the whole thing. No cards. No conditions. No handshake to memorize, no notebook with a padlock drawn on the cover, no spare anything, no rule about who you may not sit with.

The sign went up on the cafeteria wall slightly crooked, in four colors, with too much tape, at 7:44 in the morning, by a person who had been awake since four.

Day one had four members, and three of them were already her friends.

Attendance is exactly us, Wren observed, from inside a pair of black cat ears she claimed she had found.

Azalea declared it a historic success anyway, voted herself president, then immediately un-voted herself on the grounds that a president is basically a kind of card. Small acts, she said. Give it a day. Nia gave her half a cookie, which is how Nia votes.

Day two, Savannah arrived in cardboard cat ears she had built in study hall out of a cereal box and exactly one staple.

She apologized for them twice on the way over, and started a third apology, and did not get to finish it, because she was told they were perfect before she had even finished sitting down.

They were not perfect. One of them was noticeably bigger than the other one. That is not the point and has never been the point, and by Thursday she was wearing them on the bus.

Day two also had a plot twist, and the plot twist was standing there holding a pair of slightly crumpled plain grey ears and not looking at anybody directly.

So is this, like, open to everybody, Dash asked, with nothing like his hallway voice.

Yeah, Azalea said. And you and me are going to have a talk about jokes.

Both halves of that sentence were an invitation. She meant both halves. They had the talk on Friday and it took four minutes and he has not done the bit since.

Day three belonged to the girl who had thrown a membership card into the recycling bin back in chapter one without slowing down.

Junie turned up with paper dinosaur ears duct-taped to her skate helmet, struck a pose at the end of the table, and became member number five of a club with no members list.

Duct tape, she said. Dinosaur. Deal with it.

Best ears yet, said Wren, who does not hand out compliments and has been quoted on this one ever since.

Two weeks later, Ears Club had nineteen members, a waiting list it flatly refused to use, and one rule written on a napkin in marker: everybody who shows up is in.

Azalea gave her one speech of the year standing on a chair with her arms out, and the speech was four words long, and the four words were: everybody's already in.

Then the lunch aide asked her to get off the chair, and she did, and the cheering went on for a while after that anyway.

By Friday it had spilled out of the cafeteria and into the courtyard, which nobody had planned and nobody bothered to stop.

A crowd in cat ears and fox ears and one pair of ears taped to a helmet, cheering a skateboard trick that did not entirely work, in the middle of a school where two weeks earlier the biggest thing happening was a notebook with a padlock drawn on the front.

Even the ears are in, Junie said, which does not mean anything, and which everybody understood perfectly.

She never did figure out how to be less Azalea.

She got extremely, spectacularly good at being Azalea on purpose instead — louder in the places where loud is welcome, quieter in the places where somebody else is halfway through a story about a goat, still wrong sometimes, still apologizing properly when she is, still awake at four in the morning with something enormous.

And the funny thing about being yourself out loud, it turns out, is how many people come running.

Same time tomorrow, she said, walking out into the sun with four of them. Bring ears.

The school paper had four reporters and usually nothing to report. On Monday two of them showed up at the Ears Club table with a camera and a notebook and asked who was in charge, which turned out to be the only question Azalea could not answer.

Because nobody was. That was the whole design. There was no president, no padlock, no notebook with a list of names in it, and no condition you had to agree to first. There was a table, and a sign somebody had redrawn twice, and a rule that fit on one line: bring ears, or borrow a pair, or just come sit down. Azalea talked for forty minutes. The reporters got two pages of notes and one photo of her standing on a chair with her arms out like a weather system.

Tuesday morning the intercom crackled the way it always did, and the principal read the lunch menu, and the bus changes, and then — completely calmly, as if it were a normal thing to say out loud in a school — he said that the Ears Club met at the long table by the windows and that everyone was welcome.

He was wearing brown paper bear ears while he said it. He had made them at home, at his kitchen table, on a Sunday, which is a thing Azalea thought about for weeks afterwards. Two office helpers were laughing behind him. Somewhere in a classroom down the hall, a girl with rainbow patched overalls put her forehead on her desk and made a small squeaking noise of pure joy.

Peyton came over at lunch holding a pair of plain grey ears, cut out badly, and stood at the end of the table the way new kids stand — half a step further back than they need to.

There was a version of this where Azalea made her say something first. Where she had a condition ready, because Peyton had once had a condition for her, and conditions are easy to hand back. She thought about the fourth paw print on the napkin: pick what you do. Then she pulled out the chair beside her and said there was a chair, and there was always a chair, and that was that. Peyton sat down. She wore the ears crooked all week.

By Thursday the wall outside Room 5 had gone from one taped-up drawing to about sixty of them, in rows, in marker and crayon and one done entirely in silver gel pen. Somebody drew hammerhead shark ears. Somebody drew ears for a snail, which do not exist, which did not stop them.

Nobody had asked permission. The custodian taped the drooping corners back up instead of taking them down. Azalea stood in the middle of it with her hands clasped under her chin and did not say a single word for almost a full minute, which is the longest anybody has ever recorded.

The town has a parade every fall: fire truck, marching band, the hardware store's float that is really just a trailer with hay on it. That Saturday it had one extra section, wedged between the band and the hay, and the extra section was ears.

Kids, grown-ups, two dogs in floppy paper ears, one baby in a stroller wearing a knitted set of them. Junie rode the edge of the street and popped a small trick every time the drums hit. Azalea walked out front with both arms up, and people on the sidewalk yelled her name — not because she was famous, but because they knew her, which is a completely different and much better thing.

The bakery on the corner taped enormous cat ears above the window and started selling the cinnamon buns under a new name. Cub ears. Same bun. Sold out by eleven.

The baker leaned out with a tray and told the kids the ears were free and the buns were definitely not, and two kids stood with their hands flat on the glass like the glass was the only thing keeping them civilized. Azalea bought one, split it four ways badly, and declared the uneven pieces a tradition.

They ended up on Nia's porch steps with a pitcher of lemonade and four different pairs of ears: unicorn, bear, cat, and Junie's helmet with duct-taped dinosaur spikes she refused to remove even while sitting down.

Wren said it was the best worst idea Azalea had ever had, which from Wren is basically a medal. Azalea said it started with a padlock on a notebook, and they all went quiet for a second, because it had. Somebody had built a little locked thing to keep people out, and the answer had turned out to be building a much bigger unlocked thing right next to it. They stayed on the steps until the streetlights came on and Nia's dad turned the porch light off and on twice.

That night her mom had a surprise on the porch swing: the napkin, the actual napkin, four little paw prints in fading marker, in a small wooden frame.

They sat together in the last of the orange light, her mom in green frog ears because of course she was, and Azalea held the frame on her knees with both hands. Stop. Look. Wonder. Pick what you do. She had not become quieter. She had not become easier. She had just gotten very, very good at being Azalea on purpose, and at noticing when somebody else was trying to be themselves too.

"Mom," she said. "I'm going to need way more ears."
